A major telecom conglomerate headquartered in Malaysia spans over 100 countries and faces challenges in identifying early warning signs of equipment degradation. To address this, a proof of concept (POC) was deployed using Ecolibrium SmartSense at 1 data centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, across critical assets to demonstrate the value of predictive monitoring.
Outcome Summary
- Detected high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and UPS current imbalance
- Improved electrical health: Current THD reduced to <10%, Voltage THD to <5%, and current imbalance to <2%
- Avoided unplanned downtime and ensured business continuity
The Challenge
The client operated with multiple monitoring systems but lacked granular insights into equipment health, specifically UPS and CRAC performance. This limited their ability to anticipate faults or degradation in performance. Unchecked THD levels and current imbalance were increasing the risk of failure in UPS systems, potentially jeopardising uptime for the entire facility.
The Solution
Ecolibrium SmartSense was overlaid on the existing DCIM and BMS systems without disrupting infrastructure. A total of 14 critical assets, including 8 CRAC units and 4 UPS systems, were monitored via 250 data points. Ecolibrium SmartSense algorithms diagnosed issues in real time, identifying high current THD (>12%), voltage THD (>6%), and current imbalance (>5%). The platform delivered corrective recommendations, and the operations team implemented changes based on these insights.
We analysed 250 data points and monitored 14 equipment. The solutions implemented are operational excellence, asset cbm/pdm and energy management.
The Outcome
Within weeks, Ecolibrium SmartSense helped reduce current THD to below 10%, voltage THD to under 5%, and current imbalance to less than 2%. These improvements significantly reduced the likelihood of UPS-related failures, enabling the client to maintain consistent uptime. The success of the pilot has prompted discussions to expand the deployment to four additional data centres across Malaysia.
The Impact
Ecolibrium SmartSense seamlessly overlaid the existing DCIM infrastructure to provide real-time visibility into electrical and thermal health across critical assets. The platform detected early indicators of high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and current imbalance within UPS systems, which traditional systems had not flagged. With actionable alerts and clear diagnostics, the operations team was able to proactively address these anomalies. As a result, electrical performance was maintained below critical risk thresholds, helping the facility avoid downtime and ensure uninterrupted business continuity.
