India’s largest metro rail system, operating a vast 392 km network with over 280 stations, faced significant challenges in tracking power generation, ensuring regulatory compliance, and managing carbon emissions. With ambitious net-zero goals and a 300 MW solar integration target, the organisation partnered with Ecolibrium Smartsense to automate compliance reporting and streamline energy monitoring. It has been deployed at 200 + locations,150+ substations & depots.
Outcome Summary
- Enabled carbon credit eligibility through UNFCCC-aligned reporting
- Facilitated 300 MW solar power wheeling via SLDC compliance
- Improved operational efficiency with reduced manual intervention
The Challenges
The metro rail organisation had installed 30 MW of rooftop solar panels across 150+ substations but lacked centralised, real-time visibility into solar generation and power demand. Manual data tracking created reporting delays and inaccuracies, making it difficult to comply with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) carbon reporting standards and India’s Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) requirement of sending 15-minute updates to SLDCs. These gaps threatened both carbon credit eligibility and access to a 300 MW solar supply via a major utility provider.
The Solution
Ecolibrium SmartSense was deployed, integrating with over 200 sites using energy meters and IoT gateways. The system created a centralised, real-time dashboard to monitor solar generation, grid power usage, outages, and performance anomalies across the BOOT-based rooftop solar network. Ecolibrium SmartSense also enabled 15-minute automated reporting aligned with SLDC and CERC mandates, reducing manual errors and delays.
Analysed real-time data from 200 + energy meters and monitored Energy meters, solar panels, communication gateways, ABT Meters & solar BOOT assets. We implemented operational excellence, energy management, digitised management and asset CBM/PDM solutions to resolve the challenges.
The Outcome
Automated reporting to UNFCCC enabled carbon credit eligibility and access to 300 MW of solar power. The Ecolibrium SmartSense platform helped the organisation meet CERC regulations through 15-minute SLDC reporting, while improving operational efficiency and reducing dependence on manual processes.
The Impact
Ecolibrium SmartSense delivered a single pane view of energy generation and consumption, ensuring compliance and supporting carbon reduction efforts. The platform was deployed across 200+ sites and monitored 150+ substations, enabling real-time tracking of rooftop solar. It automated 15-minute reports to SLDCs, eliminated manual tracking, and enhanced day-to-day operations with live dashboards and alerts, setting a benchmark for public infrastructure sustainability.
